From San Francisco — 08/10/2008

This is one of the better Public County Hospitals which may be damning with faint praise. Salaries and benefits are guided by the Union and are above average--especially with overtime. (the highest earning employee of the City of SF this year was a psych tech at the Hospital with >$325K in overtime) Many, many incompetent employees who cannot be fired; Exceptional lack of cooperation among staff especially between City employees and UC employees. The City benefit structure is very generous: after 5 years of employment you get full lifetime health care coverage. For employees at SFGH career growth involves leaving for the private sector. Ambitious, competent people don't stay at SFGH. The work environment is disheartening due to lack of resources, difficult patient population and difficult co-workers. Generalizing, there is a self-dramatizing and sanctimonious attitude of the staff: "it doesn't get any more real than SFGH" is their marching slogan. That covers a multitude of sins. This is not to say there are no hard-working, competent and caring employees--there are but they are few. Also the unhappy marriage of the City which runs the hospital and UCSF which provides professional services (doctors, etc.) has a profound negative impact on the work environment, patient care and generally the running of the facility. Still, compared to LA County General or Oakland's Highland, and given what I've already said, SFGH is far superior in terms of patient care, resources and work environment to these other large urban public hospitals.
