Given the previous reviews, I guess it all depends on which department/center you're in. I'm fortunate enough to be in one where the staff and our work is highly respected by our supervisors, and the faculty put in hard, quality hours on innovative stuff. Job security depends on grant funding, but that's no less stable than your typical non-academic setting anyway. WashU is subject to all of the issues that plague any other research institution - as long as you're prepared for that mind-set, you're fine. It's not cushy by any means, but I've seen much worse elsewhere.
