The pay: Anyone who works with the public should be properly compensated monetarily. As it is, the salary is just above minimum wage, which is not fair for a professional field. Librarians should make more money than that.

You do not get much respect there, from either the patrons or the higher ups. You're just a clerk, who cares what you think?

The benefits are pretty good. Fair insurance, good vacation time.

You can't really separate the work from your home life because of how much and when are you expected to be there. For the clerks, you may have an alternating schedule so that you don't get off until 8 p.m. and you are expected to be back at 8:30 in the morning. You have to build your home life around when you are going to be at work.

There is OK career potential if you have the right education and you are friendly with the right people. I know of a couple of people who got promotions simply because they are friendlier with who's doing the hiring than other people.

Location is fine, it would be nice if there was employee parking instead of having to compete with the patrons over parking. If a special event is taking place then employees cannot even find any place to park. In addition, the city never pays to have the outside lights fixed, so when you are leaving at 8 p.m. and it is pitch dark, you don't have any lights to find your car.

Unfortunately, it is not easy to work with your co-workers. They seem to be hired for 2 reasons: experience/degree or they know somebody. Experience/degree does not mean that they know what they are doing, especially not with computers. So, certain coworkers end up bearing the brunt of the computer-related issues. That can kind of suck.

Your work environment there isn't the world's best. In fact, it can pretty well suck. It is usually very hot in there and there is no good, comfortable place for us to break at. Everybody also does know what everybody else say and does because people gossip a whole lot. The patrons are the worst, you are given no authority over them so if they are problem patrons you are told to just smile and let them walk all over you and abuse you.

There is a lot of room for improvement. It certainly isn't as bad as working at a gas station, for example, or working out at the shipyard. However, it would be really great to improve it.
