From Aberdeen, MD — 08/31/2010

I have worked for dozens of companies during my career. I was lucky enough to land a job with the Department of the Army as a Supervisory Engineer. I have never worked for an employer where I have felt soo much respect for my job, and encouragement for higher education and training. I wish I did this 5 years earlier. Companies play political games that get people fired. With a Department of the Army position, people can play politics all they want, but it is not dirty, it doesn't result in people getting laid off. So the petty backstabbing is almost non existent. I get a FERS plan, which is effectively a Pension plan (how many companies give this?), and I get to make systems work for our young men and women who are fighting (and some of them dying) in Afganistan. I actually make slightly more than I did in private industry. I consider myself not only lucky to be working for the Department of the Army, but privelaged. I encourage anyone who is fed up with Defense Contractors (just read about them on this site) to try the DA or any branch of the DoD, I think you'll be very happy you did.
