Ok to preface this I started off in customer service and later was promoted to retention (callcenter based).
My total time at the company was just under 2 years. The location was mediocre when Alltel was independent but improved tremendously as soon as Verizon took over. Benefits are great, I was able to take a few of my college courses for free with their tuition reimbursement program after performing miracles with my work schedule. I should also mention the free unlimited wireless service that every single employee receives.
The pay is AWESOME if you are good in sales/retention. My monthly bonus always at least 1,500 and that was considered average. It was not uncommon to see top-sellers drive to work in brand new BMWs and Acuras. Coworkers are also awesome; you really develop a lasting bond with people when you put up with 40 hours of crap a week, which leads me to the negatives of a career with Alltel.
Management is racist and incompetent at best, and employees are expected to pick up the slack on a regular basis. Hours are TERRIBLE and not at all flexible, regardless of a doctor's note or previous arrangement. The job itself is truly an endless fountain of bad karma. I was forced to deliberately lie to customers on a daily basis and dupe them into staying with our crappy service and signing a new 24 month contract. I saw customers pay literally thousands of dollars for service that was unreliable and inferior to competitors.
Ultimately the negatives outweighed the positives for me and I left without looking back. I now make half of what I made while working at Alltel but at least I can sleep soundly at night. The bottom line is that if you don't mind selling your soul and giving up your personal life you will make enough money to live VERY comfortably for as long as you are employed with this company. If you are a moral person however do not bother applying.
