I have to sit back and laugh at all of the negative comments on this site. Anyone who complains about working 45-50 hours a week needs to understand what a salary job entails. Madison is not a fast food joint or a hot dog stand in LoDo. Madison is an asset management firm in the most volatile market in 2010's global economy. The business is not for the light hearted regardless of the company you work for right now, so you'd best be ready to compete for a pay-check.

The Madison management team demands one thing out of their employees: hard work. If you're not willing to work hard and compete at your job then why are you a member of society? Seriously, just take your free lunch from the government and leave the big-boy jobs for the real workers. If you work hard, act professionally, and get your work done then the company realizes your effort with courtesy and respect. People who complain on this site about not getting respect are the same people who honestly believe that respect is given and not earned. Respect is earned at Madison; period.

The benefits have gotten much better the past two years. Yes, benefits tend to be more favorable to single people, but find me a company of Madison's size (200-500 employees worldwide) that has more competitive benefits and I'll call you a liar. The current benefits are: Medical, dental, vision, 401K (matching up to 5% of your salary), 15 days VSP in your first year, and $50,000 group life that the company buys for you. Where will you find all of these offered in 2010 to ALL employees regardless of time served at the company? Not too many places seeing as how many businesses are starting to hire employees as independent contractors.

I have worked for several companies that provided minimal salaries, zero vacation days your first year, and for owners that did nothing by lie to your face and to clients. Madison is a great place to work if you're a quality, intelligent person. If you're not then you should probably start your applications for McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, and Jimmy Johns.

Madison is not your "typical" employer. The partners were adamant years ago that they did not want to be part of an organization that "managed to the status quo." Their vision and mission was and is clear. It is supported by the firm's Principles Statement. This Statement identifies: what is valued, what will be rewarded and what won't be tolerated. Individuals who are seeking a "job" will not be successful. However, individuals who are seeking opportunities can be.

The bottom line, Madison's investors hold the partners accountable for their investments. Everyone, regardless of role or title, is held to the same level of accountably - there are no free rides. The firm's business model is one of a disciplined, motivated, committed and risk taking organization.

Individuals who get ahead are those who embrace, not resist, change. They work hard everyday to perform at a level where they will achieve or exceed expectations. Their reward - a career path (committed employees, who started in entry level positions, have become principals). Rewards are earned, not given.

The firm has doubled in size (headcount) during the last 5 years and continues to reach toward $1 billion AUM. Human capital is the driver, the only driver.

The majority of the negative comments posted here are way off base, thus I felt compelled to submit a quick response as to the reality of working at Madison. Madison is an opportunistic, entrepreneur oriented company. Attributes of successful employees at Madison include a strong work ethic, self motivation, high level of intelligence, and a strong willingness to wear the many hats required to make a small, dynamic company successful. The owners and executives are hands-on managers who are intimately involved with the investments & day to day activities of the company - which in my opinion is a great benefit to the employees vs. "ivory tower" managers who don't know what's going on with the business. This should not be confused with micro management.

Madison embraces a pay for performance mentality in which hard work and creativity are rewarded. It is not a 40 hr per week job - but extra hours are worked because employees are committed to the success of themselves and the company. Benefits (health, 401k, etc) are on par to most other small investment firms and compensation is generally above par. Overall, Madison provides a lot of opportunity for people willing to be committed and work hard.

I have worked for several different companies, both large and small. I have found that most companies experiencing growing pains have a demanding work environment. I have also found that people who work hard are generally successful and those who do not find it necessary to change jobs, sometimes because their current job is too demanding and sometimes because of necessity.

Oppotunities exist in every work environment. The smaller the company the closer you are to the action, the larger the company the more job security (in general), but the less direct effect your effort will have toward the bottomline. Likewise smaller companies add and subtract headcount relative to business cycles more responsive than larger companies.

Madison provides excellent opportunities for personal growth and development. It can also expose those looking for place to coast.

All of the previous reviews are a joke. While they may be based on opinion, they are not indicative of reality. Clearly all were exposed for incompetence and ended up getting a well deserved boot. Madison is a great place to work if you have some ambition and self-respect. Original thought goes a long way too. If not, you will end up here, whining about how hard your life is because you actually had to work while you were at Madison. Get over it.
